It's scary to say the least to get a prick injury. People in medical profession should know well the dangers it posses. Better to avoid it. Yet with utmost care sometimes it happens due to negligence or some unwanted actions which are absolutely unintentional.
What needs to be done after a prick injury??
Never panic.
Doctors fear risk of disease transmission due to a prick injury. They mostly fear HIV.
However the risk of transmission of HIV via needle prick injury is very negligible. And HIV is treatable due to recent advances in medicine and better understanding of the disease. Mind you, HIV still isn't curable.
Apart from HIV Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C can be transmitted as well due to a prick injury.
Few things to do after a prick injury:
1.Encourage bleeding from the wound.
2.Wash the wound in running water with a soap.
3.Do not enlarge the punctured site.
4.Do not suck the wound.
5.Once the above steps are performed cover the wound with a water proof band aid.
Consult the Physician regarding the prick injury. He will send sample of your blood to the lab and get it tested for HEPATITIS B and HEPATITIS C virus as well as HIV.
Many a times post exposure prophylaxis is advised if the risk of transmission is considered higher. It's absolutely hazardous to take it. It comes with it's disadvantages. Practically the disadvantages out weigh the benefits if at all.
There are two theories regarding post exposure prophylaxis for HIV. One states that take a stat dose within 24 hours and another states that take a 28 day course within 72 hours after a prick injury.
Post exposure prophylaxis drugs are really hard on the immune system. It over activates the immune system.
