Dental treatments

Some of the Dental treatment modalities include:

*Dental fillings or restorations:

This is one of the most simplest and painless treatment procedure the dentist does. The carious part of tooth(diseased structure) is removed and the tooth is shaped. The dentist then uses different filling materials to restore the cavity.

Cosmetic fillings are preferred over conventional silver fillings. If done skillfully by the dentist cosmetic dental fillings are hardly visible.

*Scaling: The plaque and calculus surrounding the gums is often harmful and cause of cavities and gum disease. This needs to be removed.

Scaling includes cleaning of teeth and gums by ultrasonic tips to get rid of plaque and calculus.

*Root Canal Treatment:

This includes cleaning of canals in tooth and clearing the tooth of infection, the debridement of nerve and different irrigants make the tooth free of any pathogenic infection. This treatment if done properly increases the longevity of tooth. One of the most skillfull treatments in dentistry.

*Crown and Bridge:

This is done in order to replace a missing tooth. The vacant area is given a artificial tooth or a pontic and the gap is filled with a bridge. Bridges are generally 3-4 units.Longer the bridge shorter is Its longevity.in case of crowns they are single unit custom made to fit.One must be careful in choosing shades for anteriror teeth. If the shade goes unmatched the appearance of patient is unsightful.

*Dental extractions:

Now a days this is much less required.People who neglect oral health and take their teeth for granted and suffer pain and cavity for longer periods may need to undergo Dental extractions under local anaesthesia.Wisdom tooth extractions differ from extractions of other teeth. Many a times a Oral surgeon need to be appointed for it as its tedious and skilfull.

                                                  *Dentures:

Complete dentures are needed when patient has lost all his teeth.Dentures restores normal functions like chewing, talking and also drastically improve the patients appearence.

Removable partial dentures:This can be given to patients in whom all teeth are not lost. These are much similar to Complete dentures.

*Cosmetic Dentistry: Teeth which are unsightful, broken and affecting the appearance of patients can be treated with cosmetic methods.

Veneers, Crowns, orthodontic treatments, surgeries are some of the treatment modalities within cosmetic dentistry.

Teeth whitening is much more desired by almost everyone.Although it is not permanent the results fade with time and needs to be done periodically.

Implants:This is one of the most recent advancements in dental treatment modalities.

Implants need to be placed surgically. It is done where tooth is lost. The bone quality, thickness of bone, proximity to nerve are some of the factors to be considered.

Orthodontics:

Braces placed on individual teeth with wires running across them are common treatment options for teeth which are mal-aligned.Together the system applies a steady force that makes tooth movement possible. This involves extraction of premolars or some other severely mal-aligned teeth/tooth if necessary. The role of retainers is often neglected after braces are removed. Many a times this  leads to relapse of treatment done.Retainers prevents relapse of orthodontic treatment and provides stability.

Hope the above information provides the reader with a general idea about the complex dental treatments.
