types of dental crowns

Nickel chromium Crowns:

This description would be a brief one about Nickel Chromium(Ni-Cr) crowns. The use of these crowns now a days is less owing to better improvement of porcelain crowns and aesthetic demands,However in certain conditions nickel chromium crowns are still preferred.

In cases where the clearance is less in a patients mouth Ni-Cr crowns are preferred. The basic advantage of metal crowns are that they are inherently strong.Hence, the need for less occlusal reduction than porcelain crowns. In cases where tooth height is already less Ni-Cr crowns are preferred.

Another advantage both to the dentist and patients is that even if metal crown abrades its colour remains unchanged. With Ceramic or porcelain crowns ceramic chips and underneath metal can be exposed.

Gold Crowns:
Although gold crowns are not aesthetic but yet preferred by some people. In India especially people in Bihar are more inclined to these type of crowns.

Porcelain fused to metal crowns:

These are highly aesthetic polished ceramic fused to metal crowns. The advantage is of course aesthetics and patient satisfaction. If shade is properly matched these crowns can hardly be differentiated from natural teeth besides them.
It however needs more of occlusal clearence and so tooth reduction is more than required for Ni-Cr crowns. These are highly cosmetically pleasing.

The finish lines for metal and ceramic crowns differ and the dentist best manages to achieve it for both crowns with his expertise.

Metal free crowns are available like full ceramic crowns, are usually expensive but highly aesthetic.
