Sugary meals:Harmful to teeth

It happens so many times  that you're late for work and decide to skip breakfast, then you pick up a doughnut and cup of coffee and you're on your way.Its a common scenario considering the busy and hectic lifestyle these days.

However this quick breakfast can increase your dental problems or rather create new dental problems and increases your time spent in the dental chair. The sugars in donuts have been identified as a risk factor for gum inflammation and cavities. Plain donuts contain five times as much sugar.

The amount of sugar and cream in your coffee also can have a direct effect on the amount of cavity-causing bacteria. Tannins found in coffee etch into the pits and grooves of the tooth enamel, producing a rough stained surface.

A dynamic relation exists between sugars and oral health. Diet affects the integrity of the teeth; quantity, pH, and composition of the saliva; and plaque pH.

Long-lasting sources of sugars, such as hard candies, breath mints, and lollipops, have extended exposure time in the oral cavity because the sugars are gradually released during consumption.Another common food stuffs are  doughnuts and coffee, both of which are definately cariogenic and increase cavity formation.

What can we do to lessen the sugar bath our teeth receive from this common breakfast combination?
  • Don't  pick up a coffee or a doughnut through the morning time for breakfast. If at all you decide to have it limiting the time your coffee and donut stay in your mouth as reduces the impact of the sugar on your teeth.
  • Rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste immediately after finishing your breakfast.
  • Cut back on the sugar and artificial sweeteners in your coffee.
  • Instead  try picking up fruit, yogurt or a cup of oatmeal for your portable morning meal for healthy benefits rather than a sugary meal.

Always have a healthy breakfast which is good and nutritious for your overall health.
